Tree & Shrub Fertilization

Serving Pasadena, Annapolis, Severna Park, Arnold & Surrounding Communities

Trees and shrubs rely on healthy soil to grow properly. Over time, nutrients in the soil can become depleted, especially in landscaped areas where plants compete for resources. Fertilization helps restore these nutrients and supports the long-term health of ornamental plants.

At Himmel’s Landscape and Garden Center, fertilization is approached with a focus on soil health rather than simply feeding the plant itself. By supporting the soil ecosystem surrounding the roots, plants are better able to absorb nutrients and grow naturally.

Our Tree & Shrub Fertilization Schedule

Most trees and shrubs benefit from fertilization during two key times of the year: spring and fall.

Spring applications help support new growth as plants begin the growing season, while fall fertilization helps strengthen roots and prepare plants for the months ahead.

Because fertilization is applied carefully and in moderation, treatments are timed so plants receive nutrients when they are most beneficial.

How Do We Apply Our Tree and Shrub Fertilizer Treatments?

Tree and shrub fertilization is typically performed using granular organic fertilizers applied around the drip line of the plant. The drip line is the area beneath the outer edge of the canopy where roots are most active.

We use organic Espoma products such as:

  • Tree-tone
  • Plant-tone
  • Garden-tone

These fertilizers provide nutrients gradually while supporting the biological activity within the soil.

When new trees or shrubs are installed, Bio-tone is incorporated into the soil to help encourage strong root development and establish the plant successfully.

Fertilization Supports the Health of the Soil Ecosystem

Rather than relying on heavy fertilizer applications, the focus is on improving the soil environment around the roots.

Organic materials such as compost and earthworm castings can help improve soil structure and support the activity of beneficial organisms within the soil. This area surrounding the roots, often called the rhizosphere, plays an important role in how plants absorb nutrients and water.

By improving soil health, trees and shrubs are better able to grow naturally and remain resilient over time.

Healthy soil biology supports long-term plant growth and resilience.
