Overseeding
Serving Pasadena, Annapolis, Severna Park, Arnold & Surrounding Communities
Over time, lawns can become thin, patchy, or worn down from foot traffic, weather, and seasonal stress. Overseeding introduces new grass seed into an existing lawn, helping improve turf density and restore areas that have become sparse.
At Himmel’s Landscape and Garden Center, overseeding is often recommended as part of a broader lawn care approach to help lawns grow thicker and healthier over time.
Regional Grass Seed Blends Are Used for Overseeding
Selecting the right grass seed helps ensure the lawn performs well in local conditions. For overseeding projects, we typically use:
- Vitality grass seed, formulated for lawns in this region
- Shade-Mate seed blends designed for lawns with heavier shade conditions
Matching the seed to the environment helps new grass establish more successfully and improves the long-term health of the lawn.
When Is Overseeding Typically Performed?
Overseeding is most often performed during the fall months, usually September through October, when conditions are ideal for cool-season grass to germinate and establish strong roots. Cooler temperatures and seasonal rainfall help support successful seed growth during this time.
Some lawns benefit from overseeding once each year, especially if the goal is to maintain thick turf density. In other cases, overseeding may be recommended when the lawn becomes thin or patchy, or after preparation services such as aeration, dethatching, or hard raking.
By introducing new seed when conditions are favorable, overseeding helps lawns gradually become fuller and healthier over time.
Overseeding Frequency Depends on the Condition of the Lawn
Some lawns benefit from overseeding once each year, particularly if the goal is to maintain thick turf density.
Other lawns may only require overseeding when they develop thin or damaged areas. Lawns that have experienced heavier wear may require additional preparation such as dethatching or aeration before overseeding is performed.
Overseeding Is Often Paired With Core Aeration
Overseeding is commonly performed alongside core aeration, which creates openings in the soil that allow grass seed to make better contact with the ground.
When seed falls into these openings, it is more likely to establish successfully and develop strong roots. Because of this, many homeowners choose to schedule aeration and overseeding together, particularly during the fall when conditions are ideal for seed germination.
Overseeding can also be performed independently depending on the condition of the lawn.
Starter Fertilizer Supports Seed Establishment
After overseeding, we apply a starter fertilizer to support early root development and help new grass become established.
Homeowners are also provided with clear after-care instructions, including watering and fertilization recommendations. In many cases, lawns benefit from several fertilizer applications throughout the season to help the new turf develop fully.
