Perennial & Shrub Pruning: Perennials may be cut back and shrubs lightly pruned when seasonally appropriate so plants remain healthy as they transition into dormancy.

Landscape Bed Cleanup: Garden beds are cleaned out by removing spent annuals, weeds, and dead plant material.

Mulch Refresh: Fresh mulch can be installed to help insulate plant roots and maintain a tidy appearance in garden beds.

Bed Edging: Landscape bed edges may be redefined to create a clean transition between lawn and planting areas.

Perimeter Protection: In areas where deer pressure is common, repellents such as Deer Scram can be applied along landscape edges.

Mulch or Decorative Stone Can Be Installed During Your Fall Cleanup

After a fall cleanup, many homeowners choose to install fresh mulch to help protect their landscape through the winter months.

A fresh layer of mulch helps insulate plant roots and retain moisture in the soil as temperatures begin to drop. At Himmel’s Landscape and Garden Center, we typically install black mulch or mahogany mulch, both of which provide a dark, rich contrast that helps garden beds stand out.

Our mulch is double-shredded, which allows it to break down gradually and add organic matter back into the soil over time. We are also careful about proper mulch depth around plants. Too much mulch around the base of shrubs or trees can contribute to fungal issues or pests, so we apply mulch carefully by hand and clean around plant stems and trunks before finishing the bed.
