Core Aeration
Serving Pasadena, Annapolis, Severna Park, Arnold & Surrounding Communities
Over time, soil naturally becomes compacted from foot traffic, mowing, and normal lawn use. When soil becomes compacted, air, water, and nutrients have difficulty reaching the grass roots, which can slow growth and weaken the lawn.
Core aeration helps relieve soil compaction by removing small plugs of soil from the lawn. This creates space for air and nutrients to move through the soil while allowing grass roots to grow deeper and stronger.
At Himmel’s Landscape and Garden Center, aeration is often recommended as part of a broader lawn care approach that supports healthy turf throughout the growing season.
Our Core Aeration Process
Core aeration works best when it is performed carefully and at the right depth. When we aerate a lawn, we use a mechanical aerator that removes small plugs of soil across the turf. These openings allow air, water, and nutrients to move more easily through the soil and reach the roots of the grass.
Most lawns only require a single pass with the aerator, but if the soil is heavily compacted, we may recommend a double pass to provide additional relief for the root zone.
As the aerator moves across the lawn, it pulls small cores of soil to the surface. These cores are left on the lawn to break down naturally, returning organic material to the soil and helping improve soil structure over time.
Aeration Is Typically Performed During the Fall
The best time to perform core aeration in this region is generally during the fall months, most often September through October, and sometimes into early November depending on weather conditions.
Aerating during this period allows grass to recover quickly while preparing the lawn for strong growth the following spring.
During the spring season, lawns may benefit more from hard raking or dethatching, which removes built-up organic material that can accumulate near the soil surface.
Single or Double-Pass Aeration May Be Recommended
Most lawns benefit from a single pass of aeration, which removes soil plugs evenly across the lawn.
If the soil is highly compacted, a double-pass aeration may be recommended to create additional openings and provide greater relief for the root system.
Aeration equipment is brought to the property as needed so the process can be completed efficiently across the lawn.
Aeration Is Often Paired With Overseeding and Topdressing
Core aeration creates openings in the soil that allow grass seed to reach the ground more easily. Because of this, aeration is often paired with overseeding and topdressing to help improve turf density.
Overseeding introduces new grass plants into the lawn while topdressing helps improve soil conditions. Together, these services can strengthen the lawn and help fill in thin areas over time.
Core Aeration Can Be Scheduled Independently or With Lawn Maintenance
Aeration can be scheduled as a standalone service, though it is often included as part of a broader lawn maintenance program.
Including aeration as part of ongoing lawn care allows the turf to receive the seasonal treatments it needs to stay healthy and resilient year after year.
