Let us walk you through Himmel's design and installation process

Questions may include:

  • What specific services are you interested in?
  • What is your timeline for having this work completed?
  • Do you have a budget in mind for this project?
  • Have you had any issues with disease or pests on existing plants?
  • How many hours of sun or shade does the area receive every day?
  • Do you know your soil type? [sandy, clay, dry, wet, combination]
  • Do you know how many yards of mulch you typically use? What color?
  • Are you able to send photos of the area?

Based on your responses, Candice will schedule a free, in-person or phone consultation with the appropriate designer.

Did you know?
In some cases, with photos and rough dimensions, we are able to provide a fast estimate without an on-site visit! This works best for cleanup, leaf removal, sod installation, front foundation facelifts, and small hardscape projects like patios and firepits.

STEP TWO

On-Site Consultation

One of Himmel’s friendly and professional designers will meet with you at your home during the scheduled time frame to discuss the project.

Hardscape Estimator and Designer

Meet Elizabeth

Designer and Project Manager

During this time the designer will ask questions to assess the scope of the project, desired timeline, use of space, and preferences regarding color, texture, design approach, and other aesthetic details. The designer will also work with you to assess the current landscape, sun and shade conditions, soil type, and other practical considerations. Consultations are typically 20 minutes long but, depending on the scope of the project, can last up to 1 hour.

Don’t be shy... Show us your Pinterest board, notebooks, magazine clippings, articles, sketches, paint swatches, or whatever inspires you. The more information you share, the better we are able to bring your dreams to fruition.

STEP THREE

Design Phase

After the consultation, the fun begins. The designer will take into consideration all of the measurements, notes, photos, and other details conveyed during the site visit to develop a written proposal. Additional research is typically required, especially for larger projects or to source special material. Our goal is a 2-week turnaround time to submit a proposal, although this is variable based on workload and project complexity.

The written proposal will include a project summary, scope of work, tentative schedule, cost and payment terms, warranty information, and if requested, will be broken down into project phases.

We do not include a 3D design with the proposal package. Formal designs are outsourced, and available for an additional fee. However, we are happy to provide a simple sketch or rendering upon request.

Pro Tip… Talk to us! If you have a budget in mind, let us know so we can work to accommodate your wishes within those constraints. Ask us about our payment plans or easy financing! If you are on a short timeline for project completion, please make it clear so the designer assigned can work to expedite the process. If you think of an additional detail or see a plant that you love and want to include in the design, don’t hesitate to provide additional feedback!

STEP FOUR

Contract and Deposit

The proposal will be conveyed to the client via email for review and discussion. It is not uncommon to go through several revisions before mutually agreeing on a final version. Once the final proposal has been approved, we will administer a formal contract for signature, collect a deposit, schedule a firm start date, and order material!

Pro Tip… We like to say a proposal is a conversation starter. We believe communication is critical for a successful relationship with our clients. Don’t hesitate to ask additional questions or provide feedback!

STEP FIVE

Pre-Installation

Before the scheduled installation, our team will conduct a pre-installation checklist to confirm all necessary tasks are completed. We take pride in ensuring safe and smooth project execution. Tasks may include application for a permit, coordinating with Miss Utility to mark all utilities prior to digging, or scheduling a site audit with our Landscape Supervisor to assess conditions and outline project phases.

STEP SIX

Installation

Once we are certain our checklist is complete, we will proceed with installation. You can expect our friendly and detail-oriented crew to arrive between 8-9AM the morning of the scheduled installation date. Crews are made up of a foreman and 2 or 3 crew members, who will have been apprised of the scope of work and come prepared for a professional and efficient installation. Depending on the scope of work, a supervisor may assist the foreman with initial job setup.

Throughout the duration of the project, a supervisor will stop by to check in and assess progress with the foreman and crews. The team will stop for a 30-minute lunch break and any additional breaks as determined by the foreman. Should any change in the scope of work arise, expect the crew to halt work until an agreement has been made between the client and the designer. Changes to the scope of work could include repairs or additional work requested.

Don’t be shy… If you have questions about the process, plant layout, or any other detail, just ask! It is not uncommon to ask questions or make changes mid-process. The best and fastest approach is to ask the foreman to stop work, and then contact Candice or the designer you worked with to clarify the request. We will communicate with our installation team to quickly resolve any issues or questions so we can get back to work.

STEP SEVEN

Completion

Once the foreman is satisfied that the job is complete, the crews will pack up tools, haul away any leftover debris, and conduct a final walk through. Depending on the complexity of the installation and the scope of work, a supervisor may conduct a scheduled walk through with the client. The goal of the walk through is to ensure the scope of work is completed to the clients’ satisfaction.

After completion, Candice will send aftercare instructions and collect the final balance due.

Remember… Communication is critical for developing a successful relationship. If you don’t fully understand plant care, hardscape maintenance, or watering instructions, ask for clarification. We are committed to the success of our installation, and your investment, and will demonstrate that by cultivating an ongoing conversation.

STEP EIGHT

Follow Up

The several weeks following landscape installation are critical to ensure long term health and successful growth of the plant material. Follow aftercare instructions to the best of your ability. Your new installation comes with a warranty. Make sure to review the terms and conditions of the warranty. Contact us as soon as possible if you notice any issues so that we can address them quickly and efficiently. Let us know if you are having trouble keeping the plants watered or cared for so that we can discuss watering or maintenance solutions.

Our goal is to provide for all of your landscape and hardscape needs and gain a customer for life. With clear communication and mutual respect, we can reach a shared goal of transforming your yard into a uniquely beautiful habitat.

Finally… If you like our work, tell your friends and neighbors! Share a review on social media, Yelp, or Google. There is nothing that warms our heart more than earning a positive review or referral.
